Discover Tsavo East National Park
With a vast area of 21,812 square kilometers, Tsavo is the largest protected area in Kenya, famous for its red-dust elephants and maneless lions. Established in 1948, the park is divided into West and East.
Tsavo East is characterized by its flat, dry plains and thorny bushland, offering excellent visibility for game viewing. It is home to the famous “Big Five” (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo) alongside giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and over 500 species of birds, including the majestic African Fish Eagle and the colorful Kingfisher. The landscape is dominated by the Yatta Plateau—the world’s longest lava flow (290 km)—and the impressive Lugard Falls on the Galana River.
A Land of Legends: Maneless Lions & The Iron Snake
Tsavo is not just about nature; it is a place of legends. You may notice something unique about the male lions here: many are “Maneless Lions“. Unlike their cousins in the Mara, Tsavo males often lack the heavy mane. Scientists believe this is an adaptation to the thorny vegetation and intense heat, allowing them to move freely through the “bush” without overheating or getting snagged. But don’t be fooled by their appearance—they are aggressive, dominant, and powerful.
The Ghost and the Darkness This region is also the setting of one of the most chilling true stories in African history. In 1898, during the construction of the Kenya-Uganda Railway (dubbed the “Lunatic Express“), two massive maneless lions terrorized the workers building the bridge over the Tsavo River. For nine months, these “Man-Eaters of Tsavo” halted the British Empire’s engineering marvel, dragging men from their tents at night. The reign of terror only ended when Lt. Col. John Henry Patterson tracked and stopped them.
Their story was immortalized in Hollywood movies like The Ghost and the Darkness. Today, as you cross the Galana River or drive near the railway line, you are traveling through the very pages of this history.
The Thrill of the Game Drive
A “Game Drive” is the art of searching for wildlife in their natural habitat. Thanks to your private LandCruiser, you have the flexibility to explore at your own pace, greatly enhancing your chances of spotting the Big Five.
Wildlife is most active during the cooler hours. Therefore, our drives are scheduled for the early morning (around 6:00 AM) and late afternoon (around 4:00 PM). Each drive lasts roughly 3 to 4 hours, ensuring you are back at the camp in time for a relaxing lunch or to freshen up before a safari dinner under the stars.
Your Accommodation: Satao Camp
We have selected Satao Camp for your overnight stay, located in the heart of Tsavo East. This unfenced camp offers a true immersion in nature. The tents are arranged in a semi-circle around a busy watering hole, allowing you to watch elephants and impalas from the comfort of your private veranda. The flat savannah surrounding the camp ensures excellent wildlife visibility right from your room.
Authentic Safari Style
Satao Camp boasts 20 authentic, en-suite safari tents nestled among tamarind trees. Each tent is carefully positioned to guarantee uninterrupted views of the wildlife while ensuring total privacy. The interiors are exquisite, featuring unique African designs and locally sourced furniture, blending the thrill of camping with the luxury of a hotel suite.
Landmarks and Hotspots
Tsavo East is immense. While it is impossible to cover every corner in two days, your Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association certified driver will select the best route based on the season, weather, and wildlife movements.
Key points of interest you may visit include:
- Aruba Dam: A man-made dam on the Voi River that attracts high concentrations of game.
- Mudanda Rock: A massive rock formation overlooking a natural waterhole.
- Lugard Falls: Rapids on the Galana River known for their sculpted rocks.
Trust your guide’s expertise to maximize your sightings.

FAQ
-
How long is the drive from Watamu to Tsavo East?
From Lonno Lodge to the Sala Gate (entrance of Tsavo East), the drive takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours. However, the experience begins the moment you leave Watamu! We drive through scenic landscapes, local villages, and palm groves. Unlike a simple transfer, the journey is comfortable thanks to our private LandCruiser, and we include a coffee stop along the way..
-
Is it safe to stay in a tented camp with wild animals nearby?
Absolutely. Satao Camp is a luxury tented camp designed to offer safety without compromising the thrill of the wild. While the camp is unfenced to allow wildlife to move freely to the waterhole, Maasai guards (Askaris) patrol the grounds 24/7. You will always be escorted to and from your tent after dark. Staying in a tent allows you to hear the sounds of nature safely—an unforgettable part of the experience.
-
What should I wear on a safari? Do I need special clothes?
You don’t need to buy a whole new wardrobe, but packing smart helps. We recommend:
Neutral colors: Khaki, beige, greens, and browns are best. Avoid bright neon colors (which can scare animals) and dark blue/black (which attract Tsetse flies).
Layers: Early morning game drives can be surprisingly cool, while midday is hot. Bring a light fleece or windbreaker that you can peel off later.
Comfortable shoes: Trainers or sturdy sandals are fine; heavy hiking boots are not necessary for vehicle-based safaris.—humans only, for now. -
Will we definitely see the “Big Five”?
Tsavo East is a wild, natural ecosystem, not a zoo, so sightings can never be 100% guaranteed. However, Tsavo East is famous for its massive herds of “Red Elephants” and high populations of lions and buffaloes, which are very commonly seen. Leopards and Rhinos are more elusive and harder to spot. Our experienced guides know the park intimately and will do their absolute best to track the animals and maximize your viewing opportunities.
-
Can I charge my phone or camera during the safari?
Yes. Our private 4×4 LandCruisers are equipped with charging points (usually UK/Kenyan 3-pin style or USB) so you can keep your devices powered while on game drives. Satao Camp also provides power in the tents or at the main area for charging batteries in the evening. Don’t forget to bring your travel adapters and spare memory cards!
-
I have dietary restrictions (vegetarian/gluten-free). Can the camp accommodate me?
Yes, Satao Camp is well-versed in hosting international guests. Whether you are vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-intolerant, the chefs can prepare suitable meals. Please inform us at the time of booking so we can pass your requirements to the camp in advance, ensuring a seamless dining experience during your stay.
